Gates Closes Civil Learjet Line:
Gates Learjet has curtailed production of the civil Lear 25, 35 and 55 in addition to laying off a third of its work force at its Wichita and Tucson facilities. At time of going to press Gates had 30 aircraft unsold that would adequately cater for any demand in the foreseeable future. The company has meanwhile been saved by its leasing contract with the USAF against an order for 80 C-21As which are virtually identical to the civilian Lear 35. Production of the C-21A will continue at four aircraft monthly, which will continue through to October 1985. If the 20 options that USAF have against the C-21A are exercised then production will be extended till March 1986. Design and development of the twin-turboprop Lear Piaggio GP-180 will continue as planned regardless of what transpires at the jet division over the next eighteen months.
Aussies Buy Big Overseas:
It certainly is a change of tempo for Australians to be buying overseas aircraft manufacturing concerns. This precise situation has now come to fruition with the merging of Paxford Aviation of Banks- town and Twinair of Coolangatta in that the new team has purchased a 51% majority shareholding in Avions Robin of Canada. Robin of course needs no introduction as the manufacturer of that beautiful little two-place trainer, the R2160, that has won so many hearts locally since its introduction to Australia in 1982.
