• Boeing have awarded a $2M contract to Hawker de Havilland (Australia) Pty Ltd for the manufacture of wing ribs and rudders for Boeing 727-200 aircraft, the fourth contract received by the company.
• On 8 January the first of two General Dynamics YF-16 lightweight fighter Prototypes was flown in a C-5A Galaxy from Fort Worth, Texas to Edwards AFB, California. On 20 January an inadvertent first flight took place when during a high-speed taxi run, severe roll control oscillations caused the horizontal stabiliser to scrape the runway. The pilot, Phil Oestricher elected to take off and regain control in the air rather than attempt to stop the aircraft, which was travelling at high speed and had adopted a critical nose-high attitude.
