Wasp to Counter Warpac Forces

Certainly, the greatest problem facing NATO defence planners is the threat presented by the massive juggernaut of Warsaw Pact (Warpac) armour.
Warpac, even without pre-attack reinforcement possesses more than 27,000 tanks, half of which are the modern T-62, T-72 and T-80, in addition to 50. 000 plus armoured fighting vehicles of various types. To oppose this formidable force NATO can field around 10,000 tanks and perhaps 20,000 armoured fighting vehicles. In addition to this, as the Warpac forces are presumed the aggressors it would be they who would determine the time and place for the initial onslaught thereby destroying much of NATO’s primary, defence systems on the ground in a well-executed first strike.
Most European defence strategists believe that handled properly and with just a little luck on their side, the Warpac forces could reach the Rhine within 48 hours of the commencement of hostilities. This obviously would allow the Soviets the opportunity to stop, barter and passively take the rest of Europe by negotiation, or, seizing upon the momentum of the attack, continue deep into the Low Countries and France. Soviet/ Warpac operations into the northern and southern flanks of NATO would already be well underway and no doubt the capture and consolidation of such vital warm water seaports as Narvik and Tromso in Norway would rank high on the list of Soviet requirements prior to any ‘peaceful’ negotiations taking place.
