Update – Boeing 757

One of the aeronautical engineering achievements of recent times was certainly Boeing’s launch of two brand-new aircraft programmes almost simultaneously. While sharing a measure of designed-in commonality, the 767 and 757 twins represent a joint development effort second to none in commercial aviation.

The smaller of the twins is the 757.

This attractive aircraft was broadly conceived in the mid-seventies as a developed 737, in fact very much a clone of what today is designated the 737-300. The design requirement soon outgrew the 737 regime and a target of an aircraft of 727 dimensions yet able to carry up to a third more passengers at greatly reduced seat-mile costs evolved. This became public as the 7N7 and was officially launched, along with the 767, to the public as the 757 at the 1978 Farnborough Air Show.
