Tropic Workhorse

According to Air Nuigini pilots, de Havilland Canada must have had Papua New Guinea in mind when they designed the remarkable Dash 7.

Their reasons became obvious when I recently Joined Captains Ian Phillips, Dash 7 fleet captain, and Peter Sharpe, for a special charter flight in P2-ANO to give delegates to a Port Moresby seminar on maritime commerce in developing countries, a closer look at the Ok Tedi project.

Takeoff out of Port Moresby’s Jackson Field was quite leisurely and unfussed with V1 and rotation at 78 knots with 25 degrees of flap, using 1210 rpm and a torque setting 4400 foot-pounds to develop about 1000 horsepower on each engine.
