Jim Thorn Interviews Lt Cmdr Andy Auld and Flt Lt Ted Ball

There is nothing like the real thing to battle test modern, and largely untried, weapon systems. The multitude of lessons learnt, and indeed re-learnt from this recent conflict will provide an influence upon naval and air tactics for many years to come. In this special feature, we have great pleasure in interviewing two pilots who between them flew 130 missions over the Falklands. Lt Cmdr Andrew (Andy) Auld, Commanding Officer of 800 Naval Air Squadron and Flt Lt Ted Ball also of 800 Squadron describe in detail the operational difficulties and achievements of the Falklands air war.

JT: Andy, the Argentine invasion of the Falklands was literally straight out of the blue, as was the speed at which Hermes, Invincible and their escorts were despatched to battle. Can you outline the feeling amongst the Sea Harrier crews at that time and the preparations taken in additional air combat manoeuvring and ground attack training prior to reaching the Falklands?
