Profile-Fokker F-28 Fellowship

The name Fokker has had an association with Australia since Australian airmen met with Luftwaffe Fokker fighters in air battle during World War I. Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith’s ‘Southern Cross’ was a Fokker trimotor monoplane F. Vllb- 3m. Sir Reginald Ansett started his original airline with Fokker Universal. Ansett Airlines, along with the rest of Australia’s larger internal airlines, operate the highly successful Fokker F27 Friendship. Following in Friendship’s footsteps is the F28 Fellowship, which is, in Australia, slowly but surely repeating its overseas sales success.

Anthony Fokker, a Dutchman, built his first aircraft, the Spider, in Germany in 1910. During World War I he built a series of successful military aircraft, the Fokker DR. 1 Triplane winning fame as the scarlet red aircraft of the famed Baron Manfred von Richthofen – the ‘Red Baron’. After the war, Fokker moved to Holland and founded the present company which has developed some 125 different types of aircraft for civil and military markets. Today, Fokker employs 9700 people in six factories throughout the Netherlands, and in addition to F27 and F28 production lines, is involved in licence manufacture of the General Dynamics F-16 fighter for the Royal Netherlands and Royal Norwegian Air Forces. The company is also active in maintenance, repair and modification work, and component manufacture for the Shorts SD330 and Airbus A300.

The F28 Fellowship first flew on 9th May, 1967, and has been designed as a jet-powered successor to the F27 Friendship. The original aircraft was powered by two Rolls Royce RB. 183 Spey 555-15 turbofans of 9850 lb st (4479 kgp), and seated up to 65 passengers. Entering airline service in 1969, the F28 had been certificated with a maximum gross weight of 62,000 lbs (28,120 kg) – more than 5000 lbs (2270 kg) above the original design figure. The F28 was the first twin-jet with noise levels below FAR Part 36 noise certification requirements – a feature that was to prove very attractive to prospective customers.
