Part Eight in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia

In the hectic post-war years of airline expansion in Australia, many aircraft entered service more so on the basis of their availability and price, than suitability as an economically efficient airliner. Several types spring to mind and one of these was the Lockheed Hudson. What initially started life as an airliner was adapted to a military role. After the war, some of these Hudsons were converted to make them more suitable for civilian use.

When the original Lockheed Model 10 Electra first flew in 1934 it was to form the basis of a distinguished line of twin-engined aircraft. Powered by two 400 hp Wasp Junior engines it carried a crew of two and 10 passengers. Span was 55′, length 38′ 7″ and loaded weight was 10,500 lb. In 1936 a smaller version the Model 12 was introduced. It differed principally by having passenger accommodation reduced to six. The combination of smaller size and lighter weight with similar engines, (later versions had the advantage of 450 hp powerplants) resulted in improved performance over the Model 10. Span was 49′, length 36′ 4″ and loaded weight 8650 lb.
