USAF Shows The Way

Aerial Refuelling … The USAF Shows How It’s Done

With the confirmation of the McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet as the RAAF’s tactical fighter, the need for an aerial tanker fleet for the RAAF has assumed a new sense of urgency. By the end of the decade, the RAAF will have approximately 100 combat aircraft whose tactical potential will be greatly enhanced by mid-air refuelling. The force multiplier effect of the F-111 and F-18 squadrons needing tankers will undoubtedly rekindle comment amongst defence planners for a decision to be made soon about the RAAF tanker requirement.

For many years the F-111 squadrons have been restricted in fulfilling their ultimate potential role by lack of tanker back-up. It would be a shame if the Hornet were similarly hampered when they are introduced into RAAF service. The type and number of tankers have yet to be decided. However, the one fact that is certain is that the tanker will either be a KC-135 or a derivative.
