AADR Proudly Presents Its Second Annual Listing Of The Third Level Airlines Of Australia, Compiled By Mike Clayton
Since our first Annual Regional (Third-Level) Airlines Directory, a year of many changes has emerged. Three fairly major airlines have gone – Northern Airlines, Intercity Airlines and Countrywide Airlines while Valley Air Services were false starters. But many new regional airlines have taken the routes vacated. Some have been established charter operators, others are totally new airlines. Major changes to the existing status quo include the purchase of the MASLING/AEROPELICAN operation by TNT and the effect that that will bring about at Mascot Airport as Ansett will become reservations sales agents and Air New South Wales will become ground handling agents.
Aviation Development Co has added two further regional airlines to their initial acquisition of Advance Airlines, now renamed AVDEV AIRLINES. The two newcomers to the group are Thorpes Transport, with operations in the Torres Strait region, and Davey Air Services and their routes out of Sydney. through Dubbo to the far west of NSW. Jet Charter of Sydney have acquired Clubair and we can expect to see a Short 330 in operation into MascotAirport in the near future, as the aeroplane is currently at Tamworth for crew training. BPA and probably East-West Airlines are set to take over some of the existing routes of both Ansett Airlines and TAA, but not to the great extent that has been suggested at times.
With the demise of Northern Airlines in Darwin, many of the Northern Territory’s charter operators have been given Regulation 203 licences to operate scheduled services. In fact, we could well be a bit adrift with the final situation pertaining in the Territory, but any updates will be in coming issues of this magazine. A tremendous amount of new scheduled operators have appeared in South Australia, too, as the various routes of Intercity Airlines are shared out. Similarly, the routes of Countrywide are being re-allocated. Northern, Intercity and Countrywide all went under early this year and the position is really only clarifying itself as we go to press.
