Gilbert Spencer woke early in a state of quiet excitement. He swung himself out of bed and went to the window, delighted at the promise of blue sky: a Melbourne autumn day at its best – perfect for flying.
Today for once he could forget the worries of his accoun tancy practice and, even if only for a few short hours, step back into the role he loved best for himself since the momen tous days of his RAAF service all those years ago.
Many times in his life he had regretted not pushing harder at the door of a civil aviation career when he was de mobbed back in 1947. But at least he’d managed to keep up his flying with the Aero Club and had always been careful never to allow his licence to lapse – though in the last few years since he’d passed the 50 mark, he’d found it increasingly difficult to make the effort.
