Fighter Concepts For The Nineties
Ray Braybrook surveys the new era of advanced technology fighter aircraft, aircraft concepts that will eventually replace today’s TFF contenders.
The present decade has produced several major advancesin in the combat aircraft spectrum. In ground attack, the USMC and RAF (not to mention Mr Brezhnev’s howls of protest over Britain’s proposed sale of Harriersto China) have proved that V/STOL is no longer just a technological curiosity, but a viable concept for world-wide land/sea operations, with some important spinoffs in the dogfight area.
In air defence, the USN has demonstrated that one aircraft can simultaneously engage multiple targets (including cruise missiles) at extremely long range. In air superiority, the USAF has taken delivery of the first of a new generation of dogfight aircraft, capable of unprecedented levels of acceleration, climb and sustained turn rate.
