Project Jindalee

A living example of the degree of defence research expertise available in Australia

Through the early to late 1960s some rather cryptic press releases would appear from time to time in the Parliamentary Press Gallery in Canberra. Issued by the then Department of Supply they would inform of forthcoming night-time rocket launchings at Woomera.

The rationale for the press releases, it seemed, was to stymie any UFO-type hysteria about strange lights in the sky at night. They were never specific about the purpose of the launchings other than “the investigation of upper at­mosphere phenomena”. The subject was classified.
