The golden opportunity, lost again!

Australia is a large continent with over 20,000km of coastline inhabited by a mere 14 million people. In any language that equation adds up to a large proportion of our coastline EEZ and associated airspace left largely unpatrolled and unprotected against any foreign, let alone hostile, in­truder.

If the crunch should ever come, then numbers will play as vital a part in survival as quality and technology. Just as 20 Orions give double the available surveillance as 10 and 90 Mirages give double the protection of 45 then it becomes ap­parent that Australia must maximise efficiency from its fighting machine in order that a numerically small combat force can hit the enemy in greater numbers of sorties than he would anticipate.
