A New Truck For Wallaby Airlines

Any person interested in defence should be quite excited by the probable RAAF/RAN FAA equipment status in the 1980s.

Australia should boast a very worthwhile Tactical Fighter Force for air defence and ground support while Harpoon equipped Orions and F111Cs will provide our shores with effective long range defence from seaborne forces. The RAN hopefully will have one or two Harrier Carriers with a full in­ ventory of Sea Harriers an’d ASW helicopters while Jindalee 0TH radar will cover our eritire continental region. Army will be equipped with new ground transport equipment, ad­ vanced communications facilities and a variety of potent man-portable missiles.

Australia’s civilian air transport group will comprise a large and effective assortment of both long and short range transports while the RAAF will have no less than two dozen Hercules airlifters to support forward operations. Certainly a bevy of advanced aircraft, missiles, ships and electronics will make our forces the best trained and equipped in our region. Decisions on procurement of new equipment take time. The final TFF decision won’t be decided till well into 1978, while marketing of each competing aircraft began several years ago when the Mirage replacement programme was first mooted in the early seventies. Navy’s DDL programme was another long drawn out saga which eventual­ ly died of old age while it took a full decade to introduce the first operational F111C.
