The Essendon Fields based Helicopters Service Centre supports customers through the provision of OEM technical advice, maintenance services and logistics support. The engineering activities offered at Leonardo Australia’s Essendon Field facility include aircraft assembly and disassembly for transport by air and sea, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, aircraft modifications and deployed support to customer maintenance activities. The AW139, AW169 AW189 models are part of a family of new generation helicopters, all featuring the same design philosophy and the same certification and safety standards. Leonardo’s benchmark AW139 is being operated by Air Ambulance Victoria (through Babcock Mission Critical Services Australasia), NSW Ambulance (through TOLL Helicopters and Westpac Rescue Service), LifeFlight Australia, Queensland Government Air (QGAir) and Careflight. Typical customers for the Helicopters business are emergency services, offshore operators, government and private customers.
In 2021 Leonardo Australia in partnership with the Commonwealth of Australia established a helicopter main gearbox Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Facility (MROF) in Fishermans Bend, Melbourne. The MROF is a test and evaluation facility able to reproduce and simulate the dynamics of flight conditions of helicopter transmissions and dynamic components. At the core of the MROF is a custom designed and manufactured 120 tonne Test Bench, capable of autonomously operating gearboxes. This multi-purpose Test Bench design can accommodate various gearbox types from different helicopters.
Partech Systems, wholly owned by Leonardo Australia, is an Australian leader in the provision of avionics test and repair solutions for the most complex aviation platforms. Strategically located in Nowra NSW, Partech provides ongoing support to Australian Defence Forces rotary and fixed wing assets.
