Kylie Minogue Qantas ad was filmed pre-COVID

written by Adam Thorn | March 25, 2022

Qantas’ new I Still Call Australia Home TV advert was filmed pre-COVID but held back until restrictions eased.

The airline said the new commercial, which features Kylie Minogue, Ash Barty and Hugh Jackman, will launch on Sunday night but is already available to view on YouTube.

Created by Sydney creative agency The Monkeys, the entire themed campaign will also run across billboards, print and digital sites throughout 2022.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said, “Now that borders are finally open, and staying open, this is the perfect time to relaunch this Peter Allen classic as the national carrier’s anthem.

“The full version of this advert is effectively a short film that highlights Australia’s stunning natural beauty and unique culture while celebrating the incredible resilience that has really shone through recently.

“After a very difficult two years, we’re focused on recovery and have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline, including several new international destinations, decisions on new aircraft and recruiting more people.”

The advert also stars children from Longreach, Adam Goodes, members of Bangarra Dance Theatre, swimmers Bronte Campbell and Ellie Cole and Aboriginal Elder Rene Kulitja.

It was filmed in a variety of locations, including Hutt Lagoon in WA, Cape Raoul in Tasmania, Uluru, Los Angeles, Tokyo and London.

Qantas first used Peter Allen’s I Still Call Australia Home to front its adverts in 1987, but said this new version is the first time it had attempted to fully recreate the original concept.

It will be shown on all Qantas international flights arriving in Australia.

The airline’s last major TV commercial, encouraging Australians to get vaccinated, became the top-trending video on YouTube in August.

The 90-second campaign featured three sets of passengers and their reasons to travel internationally, including a wedding in Singapore, a visit to Disneyland and to see family in the UK.

Great ads! Always have been since the original.

The choirs’ of children are still the best feature.

I get the impression that the original aim was for it to be released as part of the 100th birthday celebrations. Obviously, it has had a bit of an edit and now released as a standalone campaign.
