Qantas releases new ‘sight and sound’ products to recreate the flight experience

written by Hannah Dowling | August 13, 2021

Qantas has unveiled new downloadable products to recreate the “sights and sounds” of a Qantas flight, in its latest attempt to bring the flying experience to grounded customers.

The airline has released a series of aviation-themed Zoom backgrounds as well as a full 15-minute version of its signature Qantas ‘soundtrack’.

Included in the latest release is 10 downloadable backgrounds for video meetings, that could see you take your next meeting from a business class seat, in the Qantas airport lounge, out on the tarmac, or even in the cockpit.

Meanwhile, the airline has also released the full version of its iconic Qantas soundtrack, created by Australian composer Haydn Walker and guitarist Nathan Cavaleri.

The soundtrack is played aboard every Qantas domestic and international flight, and has now been released in full, at the request of frequent flyers, Qantas has said.

Available for free on Spotify and Apple, the soundtrack has also been released on the Qantas YouTube channel, played alongside aerial footage of spectacular Australian landscapes.

Qantas Group chief customer officer Stephanie Tully said the latest releases hope to recapture the experience of being in the air, as domestic and international border closures continue to keep the vast majority of Australians firmly on the ground.

“Our customers tell us they miss flying as much as getting to the destination itself and this sensory experience will help fill the temporary void while some of us can’t fly because of border closures,” Tully said.

“We have some of the most engaged Frequent Flyer members in the world and while we might not be able to take them around the world right now, we can remind them of what they have to look forward to when we welcome them back on board a Qantas flight in the future.”

It’s the latest in a long list of products and experiences that Qantas has offered to grounded customers.

The airline previously made in-flight products available for purchase for the first time, including Qantas’ business class PJ sets, as well as care packages that included wine, amenity kits and Qantas-branded playing cards.

The carrier has also conducted a number of ‘flights to nowhere’ to get customers back in the air.

In August 2020, Qantas announced it would restart its scenic 12-hour flights from Australia to Antarctica and back, giving Australians a unique opportunity to view the frozen continent from above.

Australia’s flagship carrier has partnered with tour company Antarctica Flights to provide a privately chartered Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliner, for a total of seven flights from Australia to the arctic during its peak-daylight summer months.

Months later, Qantas performed its first ‘flight to nowhere’ on 12 October 2020, which toured Australia at the hand of Captain Passerini. The flight sold out in 10 minutes.

The aircraft dipped as low as 4,000 feet as he flew past landmarks such as the Great Barrier Reef, over the Whitsundays and Uluru.

The ‘Great Southern Land’ scenic flight initially flew up the NSW coast before crossing the Queensland border for a fly-by of the Gold Coast and then up the Queensland coast to the Great Barrier Reef.

The 787-9 then tracked across Australia to conduct low-level fly-bys of Uluru and Kata Tjuta before turning back to Sydney for a flyover of Sydney Harbour and Bondi Beach.

Earlier this year, Qantas announced the return of ‘mystery flights’ for the first time since the 1990s, which saw customers offered a day-trip to a mystery location outside of capital cities, as well as low-level fly-bys of key landmarks en route.
