Podcast: Can Rex and Virgin fend off bullish Qantas?

written by Robyn Tongol | November 4, 2020

With borders opening and COVID cases falling, there’s a sense of optimism in the industry that has been missing for months.

But that good news means airlines are gearing up to battle for market share in the post-pandemic world.

This week, host Phil Tarrant and guests Adam Thorn and Christian “Boo” Boucousis discuss who is going to win out as Rex gears up to fly to capital cities, and Virgin plans co-operation with Alliance.

Finally, the team chats about the latest developments in the Qatar invasive search scandal. Will the story run and run, or have authorities drawn a line under it?

I would appreciate you getting some experts to comment on the following: 1. what is the risk to crews of heavy aerial fighting aircraft in operating in extreme conditions compared to the benefits? Are we fighting fires the best ways? 2. Wild fires are far more prevalent in the USA and Canada – therefore their crews are far more practiced. How would local crews maintain competency to operate aerial firefighting equipment sufficient for the extremely hazardous conditions in which they operate? It’s hard enough for RPT pilots to keep competent on B737’s!
IF there is a belief that aerial firefighting capacity is the way to fight bushfires in a country as large as Australia then it has to be national. But are there better solutions (non-aviation) such as reducing fire load – low level hazard reduction burning; not allowing people to build in high risk areas.
I look forward to your next podcast. But I do say that you can love aviation, but still understand that every solution is not more planes more of the time.

We’re actually answering that exact question in our next print issue and talking to all the key players in fighting bushfires and what our aircraft composition should look like.

      Thanks,

      Adam
