Passengers who travel through Canberra Airport will now no longer have to remove their laptops, liquids or aerosols from their bags at security.
The airport has installed new technology that shows officials a “more informative” scan of customers’ belonging that also uses “automatic algorithms”.
Head of aviation Michael Thomson said the machines have reached the highest level of security certification.
“Several passengers can put their bags down simultaneously for screening, compared to the previous system where passengers had to wait for their turn,” Thomson said.
“The passenger pauses briefly as they pass through the body screening machine and it provides a safe full image for operators to review.
“This more informative image coupled with automatic algorithms to help guide operators to items of interest, makes this a truly powerful security tool.”
The airport is also still using body temperature scanning thermal cameras on all passengers to detect symptoms of COVID-19.
Canberra’s move follows the unveiling of similar tech at Avalon.
The Victorian airport claimed to be one of the first in the country to transition towards “100 per cent computed tomography technology” after it installed a new Rapiscan CT scanner, body scanner and checked baggage screening.
The body scanner uses ‘zero-contact millimetre wave’ to automatically detect dangerous items carried on the body or in clothing, while a new baggage screening machine and CT scanner create a three-dimensional image of a passenger’s baggage.

says:Finally catching up with New tech! It is a vast difference for those with shrapnel inside the confines of their skin, and the best bit is not having to take those shoes off in the dirtiest filthiest area where you are literally ensured a foot fungus courtesy of the airport.
