Podcast: Joyce’s big gamble as Qantas wakes from hibernation

written by Tasha Levy | June 10, 2020
Grounded Qantas 787 Dreamliner (Qantas)
More than 200 Qantas Group aircraft, including Jetstar’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner parked at our major airports around the country.

As Australia waited for the national cabinet to announce the return of flying, Alan Joyce seized the initiative early and revealed he’ll hugely increase capacity in July. But will his plan be profitable?

Host Phil Tarrant, Christian “Boo” Boucousis and Adam Thorn share their insights as to whether or not demand will be there. They also discuss events across the ditch, where New Zealand has declared victory against coronavirus and dropped social distancing. What does this mean for the future of international travel and border reopenings?

Finally, the team also chat about whether The Buffet bailed too early by selling his airline shares; the demise of Delta’s McDonnell Douglas Mad Dogs; and the world’s largest electric plane.

Doom and gloom against aviation benefits media channels, “environmental” pressure groups, and airline management trying to use covid19 to reduce terms and conditions of employees as well as delaying delivery of new equipment. Limitations of online video conferencing like zoom becoming ever apparent in lockdown. People still need physical meetings and interaction, even if just from a psychological point of view, to build depth in friendship and trust. Travel will recover.

Batteries are still way too heavy for any meaningful useage in commercial aviation. Their environmental creditials are also suspect if you dig deeper beyond the green wash. From mining cobalt(artesial mining deforestation and child labour in DRC) and lithium (massive water evaporation in arid Chile) to disposal of such chemistries. Hydrogen electric might work especially in low altitude flight.

Re: Caravan conversion: What’s cost of acquisition? How long does a battery charge take? If parachute jumping how many flights a day does a conventional machine make and what is the turnaround time?

Lots of practical questions need to be asked not just an acceptance of a politically correct viewpoint.

    Cheers
