Virgin Australia will cut domestic capacity by 90 per cent and has followed Qantas in standing down 8000 workers.
The cuts will take effect from midnight, Friday, and include the grounding of 125 aircraft. Tigerair will suspend all flights immediately.

Chief executive Paul Scurrah said, “We are talking to our teams and we are working hard to do what we can to protect jobs and extend payments for as long as possible.”
The airline group will also retain 10 per cent domestic capacity retained for transportation of essential services, critical freight and logistics.
The domestic cuts will take effect from midnight Friday 27 March until 14 June 2020. This is in addition to suspending international flying from 30 March to 14 June 2020, and the closure of all Virgin Australia operated lounges across the network.

says:No, Virgin did not do what Qantas did! Virgin sacked an entire airlines pilots BEFORE corona become “bad”. Then they upped the anti, by seeing the opportunity to sack more office staff, and then, state that VA pilots will operate Tigerair flights as well. So it wasn’t about Corona virus, it was the excuse needed to cull frontline staff for a structure that will give big ceo bonuses!
You see, they have been planning this for years, and you can prove it by seeing Tiger transitioning the fleet to 737 in readiness to sack them for the plan they now can blame corona for.
Scurrah is no better than JB, and has more blood on his hands! How many staff will commit suicide because this ceo just sacked vulnerable people without so much as a care…. don’t believe me, ask Tigerair staff !

But watch the elation demonstrated toward VA in comments and in the media and all that Qantas gets is indignation, yet it has not sacked one single staff member, nor has it frittered away ten years of potential profits and is actually, because of studious management (which many may not have agreed with) got itself into a position to weather this storm and come out the other side just as strong or certainly stronger than any other airline (well, most of its competitors are owned by their governments, including as of this week, it would seem, it’s US competitors.
Yes, does appear that the TT staff have been made redundant very quickly.
