Adelaide Airport has today confirmed the first section if its $165 million expanded terminal development will open by the end of February 2020.

The launch of the new facilities is Adelaide Airport’s first major expansion since the current terminal was opened in 2005

Six retailers will open in conjunction with the terminal expansion, including Penfolds Wine Bar and Kitchen, Boost Juice, Lego Kaboom, Airport Pharmacy, Soul Origin and Precinct Adelaide Kitchen.

The launch of the new facilities is Adelaide Airport’s first major expansion since the current terminal was opened in 2005, and will include the complete refurbishment of retail areas.

According to Adelaide Airport, this will deliver an 80 per cent increase in the overall size of the terminal’s retail and dining precinct across domestic and international areas.

The total retail footprint will expand to 7,257sqm; overall terminal expansion will be 16,500sqm.

Passenger numbers have increased by close to 50 per cent since the existing terminal was opened.

International passengers alone have tripled over the same 15 year period.

Virgin Australia will open an expanded lounge as part of the development. The first VIP facilities for international arrival and departures will also be included.

International upgrades will include a second, longer baggage belt for arrivals, more space for emigration and immigration processing, expanded security screening, a larger duty-free precinct for arrivals and departures and expanded dining and retail options.

Adelaide Airport managing director, Mark Young, said the expansion project will be completed by the end of 2021.

“In addition to the new retail areas, we’ll also start to see the relocation next month of airlines and regulatory bodies to new office space on level 1 of the terminal.”

“This, in turn, will allow us to commence demolition of Aviation House adjacent the current arrivals and departures halls ahead of the next phase of construction,“ he said.

Are you able to confirm the new Virgin lounge will open with this stage of the expansion at end of Feb, or is that set for later? The article is a bit ambiguous on that point.
