Qatar Airways plans to boost capacity into Adelaide by upgauging the route to the Airbus A350-1000 from March 29 2020.
Currently, the airline serves Adelaide daily with two-class A350-900s featuring 36 business and 247 economy class seats for a total of 283.
The upgauge to the A350-1000, with 327 seats spread across 46 in business and 281 in economy, represented a capacity increase of 16 per cent.
Qatar Airways senior manager for Australasia said passengers travelling to and from Adelaide would be able to experience the “latest and greatest in airline technology” on the A350-1000.
Adelaide Airport managing director Mark Young said getting airlines to add extra capacity to Adelaide with larger aircraft was an important part of the airport’s business development strategy.
“Adelaide is currently the fastest growing international airport for passenger numbers in Australia, and attracting new aircraft such as Qatar’s A350-1000 will help us continue that growth,” Young said in a statement.
“The larger aircraft also benefits our exporters who have more room for freight in the bellies of passenger flights heading to key international markets.”
Qatar Airways was the first airline to operate the Airbus A350-900 to Australia when it commenced nonstop flights to Adelaide in 2016.
It was also the launch customer of the A350-1000, when it took the first of 42 on order in 2018. Qatar Airways currently had 10 A350-1000s in the fleet alongside 38 A350-900s, according to the airline’s website.
The airline’s Australian network comprised five destinations. It flies nonstop to Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney from its Doha hub, while Canberra is served one-stop via Sydney.
Cathay Pacific will be the first airline to fly the A350-1000 to Australia from October 27 2019, when it switches one of its three daily Melbourne-Hong Kong services from the A350-900 to the A350-1000.
Similarly, Cathay Pacific’s daily CX170 Perth-Hong Kong service will also be operated by the A350-1000 from October 28 2019.
