Perth now has a second Airbus A380 operator with Qatar Airways upgauging its existing daily service from Doha to the world’s largest passenger aircraft on Tuesday.
Previously, the oneworld alliance member served Perth from its Doha hub with Boeing 777-300ERs.
The change to the A380, which is configured with eight first, 48 business and 461 economy seats for a total of 517 seats, represents a 44 per cent lift in capacity for Qatar Airways to Perth.

It also means Qatar will offer passengers a first class option to and from Perth, given the 777-300ER has a two-class layout spread across business and economy.

“Our Australia footprint has grown tremendously in the last two years, bearing testament to the country’s robust travel demand,” Qatar Airways senior manager for Australasia, Adam Radwanski, said.

Perth is now Qatar Airways’ third gateway in Australia served with the A380, behind Sydney and Melbourne. Qatar Airways also flies the A350-900 daily to Adelaide and the 777-300ER to Canberra.

Fellow Gulf carrier Emirates Airline was the first carrier to deploy the A380 to Perth in May 2015.

Really surprised Qatar still not flying to Brisbane,

  • Brad

    says:

@Simon, Qatar can’t fly to Brisbane under current bilateral. Its only approach would be the way it has handled CBR which meant they got an extra service into SYD on top of what the bilateral allowed.
In theory, QR could do the same thing with a tag to TSV etc though I think they have the alternative of launching a direct service to OOL now and avoid the bilateral that way.

Trust once the bilateral is increased or lifted, BNE will be added almost straight away.

Congratulations to both Qatar and Perth airport. This is part of the ramp-up of capacity to be realised by passenger growth in and through WA.
Singapore Airlines is adding capacity with the introduction of the 787-10. An ideal platform for regional services. So too, QANTAS with the new non-stop to London, an example of the way forward. More routes will follow.
Watch Asian carriers in the future as previously mentioned, such as JAL, Vietnam, China Eastern, Phillipines and Air India to name a few. The Etihad pull-out will be temporary as they consolidate their operation.

My husband and I are looking forward to our return Business flights on the 380 in September and then on to Cardiff on the 787 – I hope these upgrades and routes work out to be advantageous for Qatar and for Perth customers.

When the bilateral is lifted, Canberra will most likely be dropped for direct 2x daily Sydney and Watsr have expressed big interest in 2x daily to Melbourne.
So if there’s 2x daily slots open for Qatar, Brisbane would still miss out.
    However, Coolangatta would be likely.

Geoff, I think Etihad is done. They don’t add much above Emirates or Qatar IMO. I can see them getting much smaller and boutique rather than larger.

    says:

A one world partner to Qatar is QANTAS. QF are planning further new routes from PER. JNB is one example relatively imminent. There are more in the pipeline.
They must be encouraged and that means currently T3 base operations until PAPL can get the T1 Pier and its adjoining new QANTAS terminal and pier built.
As I have said, we are on the toe of a major increase in traffic to/from PER. No time to wast! This is really urgent and must be top of the list.

    says:

Does this mean that we can get an upgrade to business on Qantas points? That would be a huge bonus. as its not possible with the code share arrangement with Emirates

  • Kim

    says:

Flying business last year with Qatar from Adelaide to LHR return, we received 20,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points each. Must say this was the best trip ever, having flown business previously with Cathay (for more points) and Prem. Economy with Qantas and Cathay.

    says:

Such a pity that Qatar hasn’t looked ahead at the rise in demand for premium economy seating. Airlines that fail to offer this variant will lose support.
