Blue skies, fair winds and moderate temperatures set the scene for the annual Wings Over Illawarra airshow on May 5-6.
With the Roulettes roaring overhead to open the show, a fantastic crowd was treated to a diverse range of performances from civil and military aircraft alike. Across the ages from the Boeing Stearman through to the Boeing P-8 Poseidon, from the diminutive aerobatic aircraft solo and formation displays, to the military heavy-lifters and fast jets, they were all there over two wonderful days.
For many, seeing the historic Hawker Hurricane was a highlight and Paul Bennet and Red Bull Air Race pilot Matt Hall never disappoint, both in the air and meeting fans at sea level. Adequate food stalls, static aircraft displays, free amusement rides for the children and the chance to meet the pilots and receive an autographed poster ensured that visitors of all ages were entertained and kept content.
Wings Over Illawarra is earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the best all-round airshows given the sheer range of aircraft on display and the constant activity taking place overhead.
Undoubtedly plans have already begun for next year’s show and the public feverishly await the date to mark it on the calendar.
“Wings Over Illawarra” is a definite must-see.

says:I have attended Wings Over for the past two year with my family upon coming to know its existence only last year. Being a military pilot myself makes this event closest to my heart. It would be nice for the organisers if the one C-130 could be on static display next year. The air show is really fantastic and my whole family will be back again next year.

says:I travelled over from Adelaide for the event and was enthralled by the flying programme and of course the magnificent collection of the H.A.R.S Museum. The sense of can do and community spirit evident at the show made it a truly memorable visit. To the civil and military contributors-well done .

says:It’s a pity many of the aircraft are fenced off and far away from the public.
After attending Oshkosh last year where you can right up just about everything (only the F-22 was fenced off but you were still only 2 metres away) Australian Airshows seem far to fond of fencing.
At Oshkosh all the warbirds, even those flying were not fenced. When they had to fly they just started up and a couple of safety marshals moved people away although everyone just moved out of the way naturally so the marshals didn’t have much to do
