Privately held Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport is changing its name to be more closely aligned with the local region.

The airport, which opened three years ago this November, said on Thursday it will now be known as Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

The name change comes as the Darling Downs and Toowoomba prepare to launch a new marketing initiative with the tagline “From Toowoomba to the World”.

“The airport embodies the hard work of our community and will take the people, and their hopes and dreams for the future, ‘From Toowoomba to the World’,” the airport’s general manager Sara Hales said in a statement.

“We look forward to continuing to grow passenger and cargo services for our community, and to playing our role in the region’s very bright future.”

Operations at Wellcamp commenced in November 2014, with QantasLink offering the first regular public transport (RPT) flights to Sydney.

Since then, the airport has added domestic services from Regional Express and Airnorth, while Cathay Pacific has a once weekly cargo flight to Hong Kong.

The airport said it had about 80 flights a week.

Built without government money and at a construction cost somewhere “south of $200 million”, the airport has a 2,800m runway capable of handling 747 aircraft and a terminal that has an initial capacity for 1.4 million passengers a year.

People have been telling them to do this before airport construction was even completed. Better late than never I guess. Calling an airport Brisbane West when it was located west of Toowoomba was just weird.

    Good and positive move.

Would have to acknowledge that calling it Brisbane West initially has probably given far more publicity and profile than starting as Toowoomba. Now that it is well known (and has received attention in light of The Western Sydney Airport) then it is better to push Toowoomba and the profile of the Darling Downs.

How about Toowoomba Meringindan as a nod to the original owners of country.

  • Mike Borgelt

    says:

They could just call it “Toowoomba” or “Toowoomba International” as Darling Downs Regional Council seems to have redesignated the original Toowoomba Airport as “Toowoomba City Airport”.

Presumably, the 3 letter code will still be WTB…… (West Toowoomba)

Name is good now get the Wagner Boys to knock up Badergerys Creek should take them 2 or 3 years

Ronald Spencer Exactly! Rumour has it Tamworth to be renamed Sydney North, Dubbo Sydney West and Canberra Sydney South.

I think that the original name was just a bit half-smart. It did increase brand awareness but was otherwise just silly. It did little to build the regional brand for what is intended to be a regional freight hub and passenger destination.

I wonder if the name and code in ERSA will change now. Toowoomba International = YBTW would make sense – unless it would be too easily confused with Toowoomba = YTWB.
