USAF B-1Bs touch down at Amberley

written by australianaviation.com.au | November 30, 2017

Two United States Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers have arrived at Amberley for exercises with the RAAF.

The jets, from the 37th Expeditionary Bomber Squadron based at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, touched down at Amberley on Monday, and are participating in the RAAF’s Exercise Lightning Focus.

Lightning Focus concludes on December 2 and is providing air-to-air training for pilots, weapons system officers and air battle managers.

The USAF’s participation in the exercise is part of the United States Force Posture Initiatives Enhanced Air Cooperation (EAC) program. The same initiative saw 12 F-22 Raptors deploy to Australia earlier this year.

Raymond, probably 90 squadrons I reckon?

Awesome capability – nothing like 4 Tomcat engines ablaze on take off. I saw one of these in the UK at RIAT 2003 . The Bone was at 200ft full afterburner and 0.9 mach for the fly by… impressive.

I find the comments making fun of what “Corey” may or may not say disappointing. Surprised that these have not been moderated out AA. Have noted several instances in the past of some of the back and forth chat descending into what I feel is “schoolyard” in nature.

Hi @Tom, We do moderate an awful lot of comments as it is, but thanks for the feedback.

Tom, we don’t mean to disrespect Corey, everything is tounge in cheek.. I think there is nothing wrong with having a bit of fun. Everyone on this forum has had a blast at each other, and I think it is harmless and just for a laugh. I think Corey is dedicated to the ADF to have more of everything which I truely agree with him. Cheers.

We just got a great air show with 8 Rhinos going over in burner. Hard brake turns and the lot. The only disappointment was the bone who just did an initial and pitch. They leave tomorrow morning at sometime.

@Paul next time I’m in Bris visiting my sister will have to take a drive down to Amberley for a look see. Where’s a good spot to park without being asked to move on by the MP’s? & how many people are there at once?

  • PAUL

    says:

They should send those bones down to NZ for a visit too, but that may scare a few people here 🙂 Those living in their comfortable NZ bubble may actually realise yes its a big nasty world out there offshore….

Congratulations. I reside in Townsville.?? I have lived since I was 12 years ? old. I love the Air Force and nothing gives me more pride than to see those jets fly over and around my house. I don’t look like that. Once a tomboy always a tomboy. Keep your offish remarks to yourself. The Air Force is in my blood. Perhaps you are more suited to fishing. Fly high boys. God bless.??????✈️✈️✈️

PAUL , go down old Towoomba rd until you see the gate. Just park 40-50 meters before the gate on the left hand side. If you are taking photos, make sure you don’t include any buildings in your pictures. Shoot up and down of the runway. There are morning and afternoon launches. About 9-9:30 in the morning, and 1-2:30 in the arvo. Monday to Friday. Cheers mate.

I like them, they look like an F-111 on steroids!.

  • Rocket

    says:

I like the B1-B too, they were the reason the USAF finally agreed to relinquish the F-111 while we ‘replaced’ it with a joke of an aeroplane with half the capability or less.

I have read however that the Russian Tupolev Tu-160 equivalent is marginally more capable than the B1-B but not sure how true that is…

What an awesome machine .Have stayed in Ellsworth AFB accommodation a couple of years ago .Not much chance of a sleep-in .Routine morning sorties usually launch from around 0800hrs.

Rocket, the Rhino craps all over the pig. The pig has better range and payload, but the Rhino is full of tech and multirole. I love the pig but the Rhino is years and years ahead!!

@Paul will lock that in Cheer’s Mate.

Saw a good doco once comparing the Tu160 Blackjack with the Bone, very similar except the Tu160 had rotating launchers in the bomb bay like the B2 has. Since US has That capability with B2 it probably thought best to convert B1 to carry up to 24 conventional bombs or dare I say. it 24 – 250 Kiloton specials,
