Air Canada flight AC35 was sporting a new look when it landed at Brisbane Airport on Monday, with the Boeing 787-8 featuring the Star Alliance member’s updated livery.

The aircraft, C-GHPQ, touched down at about 0730 after a 15-hour journey from Vancouver sporting the new livery’s predominantly white fuselage and red maple leaf on a black background on the tail. The engine cowlings, as well as the belly of the aircraft, are painted black.

It was the first time Air Canada’s new livery, which was launched in February, has been seen in Australia.

The previous livery consists of a silver-blue fuselage with the maple leaf in red on the tail, which features a graphic dot pattern representation called the ‘Frosted Leaf’ in a light shade of green.

The airline started flying to Brisbane in June 2016 with 787s. It also flies to Sydney with Boeing 777-300ER/200LRs.

It is the only airline offering year-round nonstop flights between Australia and Canada. Qantas has operated seasonal flights between Sydney and Vancouver in recent times.

Air Canada would need to improve its customer flight service and food and beverage offering. Currently it follows the mediocre US standards.
Ask for a Brandy in Economy class and the response is”This is economy class Sir”. And with the Vancouver International Airport having no Public Bar you know that Prohibition has crossed the Canada/US Border.

I love it. I think it looks much better then the old crappy livery. Well Done Air Canada.

  • Raymond

    says:

Really, the new is meant to be better? The old one could have been improved, however it still looks classier than its replacement. Seems to be a backward step.

    says:

I like it, i think it looks slick and sharp. Also not too many airlines give the cockpit windows sunglasses!

  • Anil Kattula

    says:

Don’t like either scheme. Current one makes plane look like it has black panda eyes! Previous scheme too pale blue. Bring back the old CP air orange or Canadian airlines colours! Needs something distinctively Canadian.

The flight to Brisbane comes from Vancouver not from Toronto.

      Thank you Jarden,
The story has been updated. Apologies for the error.

I like it, prefer the old one. But still like the old one.
Still can’t wait to see AC come to Melbourne.

Basic and simple i suppose. Just looks a little boring though.

    says:

I quite like the new look, But does anyone else think it looks a lot like the old Canadian Airlines livery before they were absorbed into Air Canada? Same colours and the black underbelly very reminiscent of Canadian Airlines.

  • JR

    says:

The article states the flight was from Toronto – surely you mean Vancouver? Or does the flight originate in Toronto with a stop in Vancouver?

  • Duane

    says:

Don’t like the new livery. The old light blue, was much better.

  • Ted Iwanowski

    says:

Air Canada flies to Brisbane from Vancouver, not Toronto. Even the Sydney flight, which originates in Toronto, stops in Vancouver.

  • Sean

    says:

AC35 is from flies from Vancouver not Toronto. FYI, Toronto is a 3,400km flight from Vancouver (about 5 hours further away).

You stated “The aircraft, C-GHPQ, touched down at about 0730 after a 15-hour journey from Toronto sporting the new livery’s predominantly white fuselage and red maple leaf on a black background on the tail. The engine cowlings, as well as the belly of the aircraft, are painted black.”

I came on that flight… It’s Aircraft 801 the first of their Dreamliner 787-8 fleet.

  • Brad

    says:

Not a huge fan. Maybe a few tweaks to the old one to make it ‘pop’ more could’ve helped, but the black of the new livery doesn’t give me even the slightest ‘Canadian’ feeling.

Other than the odd short term addition to liveries (e.g. Qantas and the Wallabies livery competition), has any airline ever thought of asking the public what livery they would prefer and why? For the cost of a few airline tickets, they may well be surprised by the answers they get.

  • Alex

    says:

Where the new livery comes into their own is in winter and in snow. Looks great.

  • Carlos Moroney

    says:

    It looks so good

  • teddy

    says:

The best livery was the 1986 Canadian Pacific navy blue with the red cheatline, with the stylised arrow on the tail and in place of the letter ‘a’ in the logo. This livery lived on in Canadi>n Airlines (International) for some time until the eventual takeover by Air Canada in around 2001.

  • Wayne

    says:

They would have been better off cutting fares instead of wasting there money on a artist and paint. Big waste.

  • AlanH

    says:

Black underbelly? What’s Canadian about that? Would tend to make it look too much like a military aircraft from below. Better keep clear of the Ukraine! Why not red if it is meant to contrast nicely with the snow?

    says:

The black raccoon-like “mask” around the cockpit windows is on every A350 I have seen.

  • Stuart

    says:

This is just a rework of the 1993/2004 livery. Just add black on the lower fuselage, black on the engine cowls, a circle around the Maple Leaf and reposition the leaf on the fuselage. Probably paid a designer millions for this “new” livery, mrginally more work than the new Qantas Roo.
I had to check Wiki to see the changes to the old livery.

I flew with Air Canada BNE-YVR and YVR-BNE in November 2016. The service was great with friendly crews in both directions who exhibited fun, lively personalities. Some other carriers I’ve flown place emphasis on crew appearance but are sorely lacking in personality.
Food was tasty and perfectly adequate in economy. Regarding an earlier comment someone made about not getting brandy, honestly there was plenty of choice other than that.
Loved not having to travel via the U.S. to get to Canada and will definitely fly AC next time I visit the rels in Vancouver. The B787-9 aircraft operating the flights last November were comfortable and clean. I like the new livery.

  • Ian Deans

    says:

New livery is swish and very modern. I like it. Pity AC’s reputation for mediocre service does not match it.
