Qantas Group expands into Perth T3

written by Chris Frame | June 2, 2016

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAQantas Group has expanded its Western Australian presence, moving into the Perth Airport operated Terminal 3.

Following Virgin Australia’s move across the airport to its new T1 Domestic facility, T3 was flagged for Qantas Group use. This allowed Jetstar services to move from T4 to T3, as well as opening up aerobridge access to a number of Qantas flights that, due to congestion at T4, used to park on the northern apron.

This move eliminates many of the unpopular bus rides to aircraft operating FIFO and regional services. To that end, QantasLink’s Fokker 100 fleet now largely operates from T3, as well as 717 services to regional WA.

While Qantas departures have been operated from T3 since early 2016, Qantas has been working on refurbishing the T3 check-in areas.

In line with its national strategy, the airline’s next generation check-in system has been installed at the terminal, which allows passengers to easily self-check, print boarding passes and check luggage.

The check-in setup at T3 sees further enhancements on the already popular system, with improvements made to the checked-luggage scanning system, reducing the risk of lost or delayed baggage. This is achieved by the introduction of a 3D scanner, allowing the airline to do away with tubs and simplifying the check-in process.

Further Qantas enhancements at T3 include aesthetic updates, with bold red, white and black Qantas branding throughout.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABaggage carousels have been refreshed and way finding improved, while in the departures area, the public address system has been linked with T4 allowing for a smoother transition of passengers between the two terminals.

Qantas now uses T3 for check in and departure of regional and FIFO flights, while T4 will handle the domestic mainline network. All Jetstar domestic services now utilise T3.

I’ve just flown through the newly refreshed terminals at Perth. QF have also upgraded T4 and it looks like new. A much improved experience. T3 is also looking the best it has since its heyday and is used like an overflow terminal for QF group. Mining and charter flights with rows of QF 717/F100 lined up in the early mornings and late evenings. It does manage all JQ flights but as their schedule isn’t great from Perth, one must feel for the retailers in T3 as during the day, it’s a graveyard – very quiet indeed.
