Regional carrier Jetgo plans to offer nonstop flights between Albury and Brisbane from June 20.

The route will be served four times a week with 36-seat Embraer ERJ-135 jets, with Albury the airline’s third destination in regional NSW alongside Dubbo and Tamworth.

Jetgo managing director for airlines Paul Bredereck said Albury was a market with potential to grow, given its close location to the snow.

“We can save travellers two hours on flights to Brisbane because our jets are 50 to 60 per cent faster than the turboprop aircraft that currently service Albury and the direct services eliminate the time and inconvenience of changing aircraft in Sydney,” Bredereck said in a statement on Thursday.

“And by flying at up to 38,000ft our passengers experience a far more comfortable journey above the weather and summer turbulence.”

Bredereck expanded on Jetgo’s decision to fly to Albury in a Youtube video posted by the Albury City Council:

Currently, QantasLink and Virgin Australia serve Albury from Sydney, while Regional Express offers flights from Melbourne and Sydney.

Albury City Council Mayor Henk van de Ven said the new Jetgo flight would boost the local economy.

“The time savings Jetgo can offer are especially great news for Border businesses trying to grow and expand because they will be better connected and save so much time,” van de Ven said.

Cr van de Ven said a $4.7 million expansion of Albury Airport, which included a second baggage carousel and new mezzanine level, was set to begin in 2017.

Meanwhile, Jetgo said on its Facebook page it planned to start nonstop flights between Canberra and the Gold Coast, with the official announcement to be made in the period ahead.

“Canberra to Gold Coast will be announced as a follow up,” Jetgo said.

Finally we have airlines working in the hub-busting space within Australia. The dearth of long/thin regional jet operations in Australia has always surprised me.

It seemed that Virgin was going to dabble in it with E170s but abandoned the cause.

State boundaries seem to have long determined (somewhat falsely) the available routes, and whilst government connections often follow state boundaries, family and business connections frequently don’t.

It’s excellent to see both JetGo and Air North working hard in this space to create routes that the major airlines consider too thin to merit (using extant fleets, or by adding new aircraft types suitable to the task).

Hopefully they consider other cities and city pairs like Newcastle, Toowoomba/Wellcamp, Canberra, etc

What about Port Lincoln – Melbourne Jetgo? Port Lincoln – Adelaide is Australia’s busiest regional route as far as I know so surely would make sense…

I can see a good market for the proposed Canberra Gold coast direct flight. I know that we will use it. Paul

The Sunshine Coast would get on board with direct flights to
    Adelaide, Townsville-Cairns, Canberra and Newcastle
It currently has 8-10 arrivals from Sydney and Melbourne daily (about 1/5 of the Gold Coast)
I think it was Jetstar that gave Adelaide a go a while back 3-4 times a week but load factors were low, so it was abandoned, however, that was a 180 seat jet, not a 35 seater
Maroochydore is experiencing double digit growth year after year and is currently Australias fastest growing airport
Might be worth looking at as a hub….

This new route is great! Hope it is sustainable. I will be utilising the Brisbane – Albury route often.

I use the Townsville – Rocky service, 50 mins and $300 v 120 mins 1 stop with QF normally around the $500 mark, people should support these alternate routes to provide competition.

special fares appear to be $179 each way, which includes checked baggage & there seems to be quite a few when looked at their website.

They obviously can’t continue to have too many of these fares, which are obviously loss leaders.

Sure beats going via bloody awful Sydney (why would anyone want to go anywhere via Sydney ?)
