Aviation consulting house CAPA – Centre For Aviation has recognised Qantas and its chief executive Alan Joyce for the airline’s recent revival.

Qantas received the airline turnaround of the year award, while Joyce was named airline chief executive of the year, at the World Aviation Summit held in Helsinki.

CAPA executive chairman Peter Harbison described Qantas’s return to profitability in 2014/15 as “one of the most remarkable turnarounds in the history of the aviation industry”.

“The restructuring is particularly noteworthy as it was intelligently implemented without the benefit of Chapter 11 style bankruptcy protections,” Harbison said in a statement.

Among the other awards, Ethiopian Airlines was named the airline of the year and Indian carrier IndiGo took out the low cost airline of the year.

In terms of airport awards, the airport of the year for 2015 was Budapest Airport, while Athens Airport boss Yiannis Paraschis was named airport chief executive of the year.

Meanwhile, Vancouver Airport Authority took out the airport product innovation of the year award for its development of automated passport control kiosks BorderXpress, which had reduced waiting times and was now being rolled out to 25 airports across Canada.

And IBS’ iCargo IT solution was awarded the airline product innovation of the year.

It’s been a tough road for Qantas and Joyce, but it’s great to see that the plan he put in place is paying off. I’m sure the Unions would disagree with this award, but considering the last 12 months, I think they’d be wrong.

It is a bit like lending somebody your car and being grateful they took it to a panel beater after crashing it.

Joyce CEO of the year? Ethiopian Airlines airline of the year? Budapest Airport airport of the year?

Who is pulling the strings at CAPA?

    @RAYMAON,

CAN’T AGREE WITH YOU MORE. THOSE THREE ARE EQUALLY AMAZE ME.

IT’S JUST HIS ACCOUNTING GAME. ONCE HE CAN PUT ALL THE EXPENDETURE TO QF LONG HAUL AND CRYING IT IS LOOSING MONEY, AND JETSTAR IS PERFORMING SO STRONG AND IT’S THE WAY TO GO.

NOW HE JUST SHIFT IT AROUND AGAIN TO MAKE HIS COME BACK LOOKS GOOD.

ANYONE CAN TELL ME WHY JQ GET 11 BRAND NEW B-787 AIRPLANE AND SELLING TICKETS NOT MUCH MORE THAN PEANUTS MAKES MONEY WHILE QF MAINLINE HAVEN’T RECEIVE ANY NEW NEW ASSET (NEW AIRCRAFT) WITH STABLE TICKET PRICE NOT DOING AS GOOD?

What a joke. Fuel prices halve, sack 5000 peeps, pay obscene management salaries and win some pathetic award.

humbly accepted on behalf of the entire team I would expect. I note the unions are somewhat quiet about it.

One of the few good things out of the Hawke /Keating era, selling Qantas before the unions destroyed it.

CAPA? Never heard of them, and information is a bit thin on the ground. Is it some sort of vanity club where members pay to get awards?
The usual union-bashing in the comments is noted. It’s getting very very old but then there’s only one string to that bow, eh?

What a load of crap. It’s like everyone has mysteriously forgotten the events of the past few years.

…on the back of low fuel prices, not great management.

Afortunatly @Greg, you ,,missed ” all award’s from CAPA. Still maybe same hope for you from union. Christmas coming soon. Never know your luck. Try again…
But truly congrats really goes to QANTAS CEO Alan Joyce. And obviously to Australian icon QANTAS AIRWAYS. That is meter of fact. And where I spent one third of my life.

Complete and utter rubbish, if only Joe Hockey had access to Joyce”s creative accountants, he may still be the Nation’s Treasurer.

What a joke!! I’m sure Virgin and Borghetti are laughing uproariously.

Don’t worry about the unions – just look at how the staff are treated – unions or not.

And then there’s the passengers – have you tried a QF flight lately? Seat pitch, seat comfort and anything else branded Boeing is a joke too. And now he’s buying their latest iteration.

Certainly this award is most deserved.

Seems we wuz wrong. The guy’s a deadset genius after all. Or maybe it’s his publicists Smoke Mirrors and Obfuscation who are the geniuses.

Just remember, it was he, who in a fit of pique, grounded the airline – a feat unequalled even by the nation’s enemies in WWII.

  • John Cox

    says:

I wonder if any of theJoyce/ Qantas knockers have ever managed a company ??seems to me that when the word Qantas comes up we have all these experts come out of the woodwork.
Credit were. Credit is due well done toJoyce. the Board that backed his plan and the Qantas staff that backed there management and insured the turn around happened.

  • Matt Barr

    says:

Thankfully only 5000 Jobs were lost as it was not looking too good for QANTAS staff nor the Airline.
Obviously something has gone right – A perfect turnaround for all 🙂

Don’t forget most of all the carbon tax was removed. This is one of the most significant things to go for a long time and not a mention in the press. It was really limiting companies based here. So it actually helped to get rid of the maintenance situation that lead to justifying the thinning of the heard.
