Singapore Airlines (SIA) has unveiled an Airbus A380 featuring the Singapore flag in a stylised design on the fuselage.

The special livery, which will be on two of SIA’s A380s until the end of 2015, has been created to commemorate Singapore’s 50th birthday and features a 10m-tall and 47m-long design on both sides of the fuselage based on the nation’s flag.

And the two inboard engines will have the official logo of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, SG50.

The first A380 will begin flying in early June, with the second to begin service in July, SIA said in a statement on Thursday.

“Singapore Airlines’ success is closely tied to the success of Singapore,” SIA chief executive Goh Choon Phong said.

“What better way to celebrate SG50 than by proudly flying the national flag around the world on the world’s largest aircraft.”

In Australia, SIA flies the A380 daily to Sydney and during peak periods to Melbourne.

SIA said the special decal took about five days to print, featured 50 panels and covered a surface area of 720 square metres. That was enough to cover 56 double-decker buses.

To prepare the A380 for the special decal, SIA said 12 staff spent a week removing all the existing livery on the aircraft before 10 staff repainted the aircraft white over the course of one day.

Finally, it took eight days to apply the decal to the fuselage.

I though SIA decided not to pursue special paint schemes after ‘Taipei’.
