Regional Express (Rex) has been ranked the highest of all regional airlines by Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine for the sixth year in a row in its annual ranking of the Top Performing Airlines in the world.

The rankings are based on four areas – financial health, earnings performance, capital efficiency and business model performance, and Rex ranked fifth amongst all airlines worldwide.

“While the Rex Group’s profits have significantly declined in the past two years, Rex’s strong fundamentals have enabled it to maintain its place amongst the best performing airlines in the world,” Rex Executive Chairman Lim Kim Hai said in a statement. “And it is pleasing to see that our excellence is not only in the financial arena, as Rex was also the most reliable airline in 2013 in Australia and was voted by readers of Australian Traveller magazine as the best regional airline in 2013. On behalf of the Rex Board I applaud all staff and particularly my management team for this outstanding achievement.”

Other Australian carriers to feature were Qantas which ranked 50th, Tiger which ranked 59th, and Virgin Australia ranked 65th.

I am surprised that Virgin Aus was ranked so low.

Obviously customer satisfaction was not used in this selection process as I have never found Rex, and particularly there ‘Helpdesk’, to be helpful and/or courteous.

I fly Rex frequently (I am flying them today actually). I have always found that their staff are friendly. (Some ground staff can be not quite so cheerful at times, but no different to Qantas or Virgin) Flight attendants are always cheerful (one even addressed every passenger by name throughout the flight) Their on time performance is usually really good. They could improve their fleet. Although it probably makes good economic sense to only have one aircraft type, some of their older Saabs are really showing their age – especially the interiors. The problem is there probably isn’t a viable new replacement in the same class (Except maybe the ATR 42-600 – I’d be putting that on my wishlist if I was the Rex fleet planner). Also sometimes their fares could be a bit cheaper, but then again they are the only airline flying on a lot of sectors. Without competition, they are at the end of the day in business to make money.
