Newcastle’s Belmont Airport has been bought by a consortium of buyers led by Matt Hall.

A consortium of buyers led by Red Bull Air Race competitor and former RAAF F/A-18 Hornet pilot, Matt Hall, is pitching to buy Belmont Airport on Lake Macquarie near Newcastle.

The consortium, which also includes Hunter-based companies Airborne,  Newcastle Helicopters, and Skydive the Beach plans to upgrade the run-down airport which seen regular use for nearly a decade. Hall’s company, Matt Hall Racing operates a thriving joy-flight business using two-seat aerobatic aircraft, and he also has shares in a CAC Mustang.

“As a group we are really excited about the opportunities this presents for us and the local community in what is a beautiful part of the world,” Matt Hall said in a statement on his Facebook page. “There will no doubt be jobs created and a boost for tourism and hospitality operators due to the ease of access that the reopening and upgrading of the airport will bring.”

The contracts for the property which was previously owned by developer Mirvac were exchanged on April 15, and the sale is expected to be settled in the next few months. The consortium has set up a new website at www.belmontairport.com.au and will unveil its plans as they firm up.

Great to see an airport renaissance for once rather than it succumbing to residential development. Thanks Matt!
