Three of the most recognisable aircraft to serve in Australia’s armed forces will make a nostalgic flyover of the Sydney CBD on ANZAC Day.
A Catalina flying boat, a C-47 Dakota transport and a DHC-4 Caribou, all owned by the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS), will fly over Sydney during the ANZAC Day march.
HARS sends its collection of warbirds aloft each year to mark the occasion. Catalinas and Dakotas saw service in World War 2, and Caribous served with the RAAF from 1964 until their retirement in 2009, including service in Vietnam.
The Caribou taking part in the flyover is one of two the Australian Defence Force gifted to HARS on the aircraft’s retirement in 2009. Australian Aerospace and its predecessor organisations provided deeper maintenance and through-life-support to the fleet during its service with the RAAF.Earlier this year HARS entered into a three-year sponsorship deal under which Australian Aerospace is providing funding to support the Caribou’s upkeep.
The aircraft will travel from Albion Park, making flypasts of Shellharbour, Kiama and Wollongong on the way to Sydney. The formation is due over the city between 1030 and 1100, subject to Air Traffic Control (ATC).
HARS spokesman, Doug Haywood said: “We’ll be flying at 500 feet along the coast and, upon arriving Sydney, climb to 1500 feet to make several beats across the harbour and city, passing over the ANZAC Day marchers as they make their way along George Street.”
Earlier this year, HARS entered into a three year sponsorship deal under which Australian Aerospace is providing funding to support the Caribou’s upkeep.
Australian Aerospace CEO Dr Jens Goennemann said he personally will be delighted to see the Caribou in the air over Sydney on Anzac Day.
“Supporting the Caribou is something of a labour of love for Australian Aerospace as the aircraft’s importance to our aviation history cannot be overstated. Its legacy is worth preserving and nourishing,” he said.
