A new east-west runway will be included in Melbourne Airport’s masterplan when it is submitted to the federal government next year.
Announcing the plan, Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff said the 3000-metre A380-capable runway is needed to accommodate the expected increase in traffic by 2018/20. The airport’s passenger throughput is projected to reach 40 million by 2020 and 60 million by 2033. Passenger traffic is increasing at rates between six and eight per cent.
The east-west configuration of the runway was selected on community and environmental grounds as much as it was on operational considerations.
Woodruff said: “A new east-west runway will enable Melbourne Airport to handle more aircraft movements, more efficiently. Passengers will spend less time on the ground taxiing to and from terminals, and aircraft will burn less fuel on more direct flight paths and shorter trips from the gate to the runway.
“We expect there will only be a slight variation to the noise contours which are used for planning purposes compared to the current contours. However, there will be some areas within the existing noise contours that will experience more aircraft flying overhead as a result of the construction of a new runway,” Woodruff added.
The cost of the project is estimated to be $500 million with a construction period of between two and four years.

says:Now watch all the idiots who bought a house near the airport complain when planes try to land at said airport. ugh. Tulla has always had 4 runways in it’s long (LONG) term plan. You’d think that if you were about to purchase land near a massive piece of existing infrastructure, you’d maybe look into its plans a litte bit? nah!! we’ll just jump up and down becuase we’re dim, it’s so much more satisfying!

says:A little while ago, due to YBBN having one operational runway, there were significant delays inbound which had a flow on effect for all airlines. To the extent that the curfew chasing SYD and ADL flights, i was crewing the ADL bound flight, were Cancelled due curfew restrictions. Qantas and jetstar also cancelled flights for that reason on the same evening and I estimate in excess of 600 people were affected, some of which were most likely anti aircraft noise and anti airport expansion advocates. Isn’t it ironic. If only we had more airport capacity.

says:Thats Good news.Now the committment to a rail link to the Tulla airport is essential.we have lots of airline capacity & I also hope that international airlines will come back to Melbourne instead of concentrating on just Sydney.But we need the convenience of an airport Raillink people

Public transport to and from airport is terrible why not extend the tram line up Melrose Drive.

You are too late, maybe you do not live in Melbourne, so you would not have seen the local Melbournian news… they already started….
I live about 8Km from Moorabbin airport S.E. of the airport and still get plenty of noise, especially during the day!
At night we get the police choppers flying very low, oh, and we do not get a warning on our rates… as others do.
Was I aware that the airplanes will be flying around? Yes
Was I aware that the heli’s would be flying low? Nope
And since I live close to the rail line too… well I was aware of that too? Especially when the diesels pass around 12.30am and 3.30-4.30am! What have I done? Nothing, my body got use to them and when I go somewhere, it is like something is missing if I do not have the train sound!
Bottom of the line is, you are buying a property that is near an airport! You do NOT need to be under the flight path to have noise…
Btw, I love the formation flying that happens around 3-4 times a year 😉

I do not see that happening any time soon, how will the governmnet spend more money on roads, raise taxes and get tolls… do you know them for buying land?
Although a monrail like in Sydney, just more carriages would be nice, and will not need “that much money”.. as compared to laying tracks and aquiring a lot of land, but who are we kidding.
There is absolutely no will with any of the local governments to build a rail-link, they may talk teh talk, but not walk the walk… 🙁
