Sydney Airport has launched a website for plane spotters. (Sydney Airport)

Sydney Airport has launched a web page where aeroplane enthusiasts can share photos of aircraft and information on the best places for plane spotting.

The site includes information on different aircraft models, tracking aircraft registrations, security and restricted areas, runways and links to radio frequencies. Users are also encourage to share information on how to get the best shots and what camera equipment to use.

“Plane lovers are regularly at Sydney Airport to view the latest aircraft,” Sydney Airport CEO Kerrie Mather said in a statement. “With Sydney Airport being one of the world’s most popular airports for new generation quieter and greener aircraft like the [Boeing] 787 and the [Airbus] A380, there is plenty to see for our dedicated aviation community.”

The airport recently launched a new Facebook page and iPhone app as it seeks to drum up support for its proposed terminal overhaul.

It’s a good page and thanks to Sydney Airport for creating it but it would have been even better if Airside Tarmac Tours were still operating 🙁

I wish they would build a viewing deck with cover for enthusiasts. Wouldn’t cost a bomb and can be built in a manitenance free manner like park benches and covers etc (no staff required). I’d even pay to use such a facility. Of course I mean something close to the action so I’m not talking about terminal buildings.

There already is a “viewing area” at the international terminal. What they ought to do is set up a museum in the unused air services rooms, and make the old tower accessible to the public. yet it would cost a bit, but come on, this is the heritage of Australian aviation. You don’t realize it’s importance until too late.
