QantasLink is adding an extra two flights a week between Sydney and Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport at Toowoomba.
The additional services were due to begin on February 29 and operate on Mondays and Wednesdays, lifting the total number of QantasLink return flights a week at the airport to 15.
Wellcamp Airport general manager Phil Gregory said the route had been well supported since QantasLink began serving Toowoomba with Q400 turboprops in November 2014, with strong growth in tourists to the region.
“The spike in visitor numbers is staggering given we have promoted inbound tourism with minimal government assistance,” Gregory said in a statement on Wednesday.
“We have received fantastic feedback about the current services but we just needed some more options for same day return travel.”
QantasLink chief executive John Gissing said the route has performed well.
“We’re pleased with the performance of the route since commencing operations to and from Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport just over a year ago, which is why we’ve added two extra weekday services,” Gissing said.
QantasLink was the first airline to commit to flying to Australia’s newest airport.
Regional Express (Rex) was the next to land at Wellcamp after securing five contracts from the most recent tender of Queensland government regulated routes.
And airport owners Wagners managed to secure a third carrier for Wellcamp in December, when Darwin-based Airnorth said it would begin flights from Toowoomba to Melbourne and Cairns.
