Jetstar Japan lodged its application for an Air Operators Certificate late last month in Tokyo, moving closer to a planned launch in late 2012.

The budget carrier, a joint venture between Qantas, Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi, expects to fly domestic routes from Tokyo Narita and Osaka and is in talks with airports in Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa. Jetstar is exploring international short haul flights to destinations in China and South Korea, the carrier said.

The airline will launch with a fleet of three new Airbus A320s configured for 180 passengers, with plans to expand the fleet to 24 aircraft within a few years.
