The RAAF’s Air Lift Group (ALG) has restructured some of its elements in an effort to streamline management and basing within the FEG.

Effective October 1, the Richmond based 37SQN and its roughly 20-strong C-130H/J fleet, previously under 86WG, now comes under the command of 84WG. With the C-130 training squadron, 285SQN, already under 84WG command, this will allow for greater efficiency in command and workforce planning for the units.

The Air Movements Training and Development Units (AMTDU), which was previously under 84WG’s command, will move to the direct command of HQ ALG, and it is planned by the end of 2011 to move the command of Amberley based 33SQN and its forthcoming KC-30A tanker transports from 84WG to 86WG.

The new structure will see 86WG in command of 33SQN, 36SQN (C-17) and the Townsville based 38SQN (King Air), while 84SQN will retain 285SQN and the Canberra based 34SQN (VIP), and pick up 37SQN.
